Lusha + Smartlead Integration Guide: Setup, Use Cases
Connect Lusha and Smartlead to automate contact enrichment into cold email sequences. Setup guide, Zapier workflow, and troubleshooting tips.
Lusha charges $39/month for 480 credits on its Pro plan. Smartlead starts at $59/month for unlimited email accounts. Neither fee is the real problem. The actual cost is the 4 to 5 hours your team burns every week manually exporting Lusha contacts and uploading CSV files into Smartlead. Automate the handoff and you get that time back immediately, plus cleaner data flowing into your sequences from day one.

How the Lusha and Smartlead Integration Works
Lusha enriches contacts with verified work emails and direct dials. Smartlead runs multi-step cold email sequences at scale. The two tools don't talk to each other natively, so you connect them through Zapier or a webhook pipeline. Data flows one direction: from Lusha into Smartlead. Campaign reply data doesn't automatically write back to Lusha's contact records.
The standard workflow looks like this: you prospect accounts in Lusha using the Chrome extension or bulk list filters, export the enriched contact data, and then route those contacts into the right Smartlead campaign. With Zapier, that routing happens automatically within minutes of the export. Without it, you're doing it manually on a schedule that usually falls on Friday afternoons when no one has energy left to be precise about field mapping.
The Zapier route is better for ongoing prospecting. Manual CSV uploads are fine for one-time campaign launches or testing a new segment before committing to automation. Don't build the Zap for a single 100-contact list. Build it when you're consistently prospecting 200 or more new contacts per week.
Setup Guide: Connecting Lusha to Smartlead
The full setup takes about 30 minutes if you've used Zapier before. You'll need Lusha's Teams plan for API access, a Smartlead account on any paid plan, and a Zapier Starter plan at $29.99/month for multi-step Zaps. The free Zapier tier won't work here because this workflow requires more than one action step.
- Get your Lusha API key. Log into Lusha and go to Settings, then API. Copy your API key. If you don't see an API section, you're on the Free or Pro plan and need to upgrade to Teams before proceeding.
- Get your Smartlead API key. In Smartlead, navigate to Settings, then API and Webhooks. Generate a new API key and store it alongside your Lusha key somewhere you can reference both quickly.
- Create a new Zap in Zapier. Set the trigger app to Lusha. Choose New Export as the trigger event, or use a webhook trigger if your Lusha plan supports it. Authenticate with your Lusha API key when prompted.
- Configure the Smartlead action step. Set the action app to Smartlead and the event to Add Lead to Campaign. Connect your Smartlead account using your API key, then select the specific campaign where incoming contacts should land.
- Map your fields carefully. Map Lusha's work_email field to Smartlead's email field specifically, not a generic contact field that might contain personal emails from other sources. Include first name, last name, company name, and job title. Sloppy field mapping here causes the most downstream problems, and they're quiet ones that take weeks to notice.
- Test with a real contact before activating. Use Zapier's test function with a single Lusha contact. Verify the contact appears in Smartlead with correct field values, then run 5 to 10 more test contacts before turning the Zap on for live prospecting.
Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them
Most teams hit the same four problems with this integration, and the sneakiest one is field mapping drift. Lusha or Smartlead updates a field name, your Zap silently fails, and contacts stop flowing for days before anyone notices the pipeline has gone quiet. Set up Zapier's error notification emails on day one so you know immediately when something breaks.
Duplicate contacts in Smartlead happen when you run overlapping prospecting lists. Two SDRs work the same account, Lusha exports the same contact twice, and that person gets added to a sequence twice within the same week. Add a Search for Existing Lead step in Zapier before the Add Lead action. If the contact already exists in the campaign, configure the Zap to skip the add entirely.
Rate limits catch teams off guard during large bulk exports. If you're moving 500 or more contacts at once, your Zap may fail mid-transfer. Break large exports into batches of 200 to 300 contacts and use Zapier's built-in delay feature between batches.
Deliverability takes a real hit when you import stale email data. Lusha's verification is solid for recently added contacts, but a list built 6 months ago has meaningful decay. Run any export older than 90 days through a secondary verifier like ZeroBounce before loading it into Smartlead. A damaged sender reputation costs far more to recover from than a verification tool.
Use Cases: Where This Integration Pays Off Most
The Lusha and Smartlead integration delivers the most value in two scenarios: high-velocity SDR teams doing daily prospecting at scale, and campaign launches against large ICP lists where manual data entry kills your momentum and creates a measurable gap between finding the right contact and sending the first email.
For SDR teams, the math is direct. Three SDRs each prospect 100 new accounts per week. That's 300 contacts per week going through a manual export-upload cycle. At 15 minutes per batch, you lose 45 minutes per SDR per week on tasks that move data between tools but generate zero pipeline on their own. Automate it and each SDR recovers 3 hours per month to spend on actual outreach.
For campaign launches, the value is speed. You've built a 500-account ICP list for a new vertical. Without automation, loading those contacts into Smartlead takes most of an afternoon. With the Zapier workflow, the same transfer completes in under an hour and you can launch the campaign the same day you finish building the list.
Attribution is the third use case most teams skip entirely. If you want to know which Lusha-sourced contacts converted to pipeline, tag contacts in Smartlead at import time with a custom source field. Do this from day one. Retrofitting source attribution data after 3 months of campaigns is tedious and usually ends up inaccurate enough to be useless.
Pricing and Plan Requirements
Running this integration has a real cost floor you should know before building it. Lusha's Teams plan starts at $69/user/month and is required for API access. Smartlead's Basic plan is $59/month. Zapier's Starter plan runs $29.99/month for multi-step Zaps. That's $158/month in infrastructure before you spend a single Lusha credit on actual prospecting data.
The Lusha credit math matters more than the subscription line items. You get 1,000 credits per user per month on the Teams plan. Each credit unlocks one contact's email or direct dial. If your SDRs are prospecting 500 new accounts per week, you'll exhaust that credit pool in 2 weeks. Either budget for additional credits or set a weekly prospecting cadence that stays within your monthly allotment.
Smartlead has no lead limits on its paid plans. You can push as many Lusha contacts as you want into Smartlead campaigns, constrained only by your daily email sending volume and the number of active sender accounts you've connected.
